I have a daughter that attends college in Honolulu, Hawaii. I know what you’re thinking, must be rough to have to go to school in Hawaii, but honestly it is a great place for her to be studying. She usually flys home to visit the family, but one or two times a year we’ll all go visit her. This year we decided to visit her during spring break. Yes, I’m late on a couple trip reports.

There were going to be 3 of us traveling to Honolulu together. Traveling during the holidays with family is expensive. No getting around it. We were going to have 4 nights together and then back home. Our go to hotel in Honolulu is the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa. When we chose the Hyatt we can earn a stay towards our Hyatt Diamond status, and we’ve always had good luck choosing this property. The rate for spring break was $229.00 per night for an “Ocean Front King” room, which in my opinion was a good deal.

In order to fly there, we usually use one of our Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card buy one get one for $100 certificates. After looking at the airline rates we would definitely be using a certificate for this trip. When shopping around, flights were priced anywhere from $600.00 – $1,000.00 round trip out of the west coast, regardless of the carrier. After reviewing our options we settled on an Alaskan Airlines flight SJC-HNL-SJC. Price was $730.00 coach per person round trip. With the certificate we would be able to save just under $600.00 on our flight expenses.
Since we were going to be flying out of San Jose in the morning we decided to start the trip early by driving down the night before and staying at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. The paid rate was $185.00 per night for hotel and again, it would give us another stay toward our Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond status. Everything was set for a good family trip.
