I’m Diamond level with Hyatt Gold Passport. I enjoy the benefits, and Susan really loves the benefits. I mean she loves, loves, loves the benefits. Especially the comped morning breakfast. It’s her favorite meal of the day and as a Diamond it’s on the house. In order to maintain our Diamond elite status with Hyatt’s Gold Passport Program we need to have 25 says during the calendar year. For us, and our travel patterns, 25 Hyatt stays are not a forgone conclusion. We normally would have ~18 stays per year in a standard schedule (including 2 from our Hyatt Visa card for hitting 20K in spending). So that means we need to plan a few additional evenings at a local/nearby Hyatt somewhere. Sometimes we go to San Francisco and stay at a Hyatt in the city, including the Hyatt Fisherman’s Warf which I reviewed earlier in the year.
Living in the greater Sacramento area, another one of our options is to stay in town at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento. It actually works out pretty well. The Hyatt Regency Sacramento’s locations is in a part of town we don’t end up visiting that often. There are some good restaurants nearby and Susan and I usually make a date of the stay. Since this is primarily a business hotel the weekend rates tend to be more affordable. We normally book a Friday night and head down after work, have dinner at a local restaurant, and get a little quiet time away from the teenagers that inhabit our normal domicile. Despite having stayed there a number of times I’ve never reviewed the Hyatt Regency Sacramento.
Within a block of the hotel is a great restaurant, Ella’s. They have a nice happy hour during the week including Friday evenings, and the food and drinks are always excellent. Susan and I walked over to the restaurant when we first arrived and enjoyed a lite dinner, and then proceeded to the hotel for check in.

At the reception counter I was thanked for my diamond status and we were given a high room, #1245, with a view of the State Capital Park. The norm has been to get a view of the capital building itself, but we enjoy the park view as well. The reserved rate was $206.00 for a standard king room. Not the greatest rate in the world, but it was also Friday on a holiday weekend. Self-parking in the attached garage is $20.00 per night. This Hyatt Regency has a club room, but it is closed on the weekend. The hotel comps diamonds 2,500 points for this inconvenience, as well as complimentary breakfast at the hotel restaurant. This is more than a fair deal in my book. We also accepted the in-room amenity which included a food plate and wine.

We took the hotels main elevators up to the 12th floor and then took a left and right to get into our room. Upon entering there is small entry space with the closet directly in front of you. Immediately after that is the room bathroom followed by the room itself. The space is not large, and it feels like a standard ~300sq hotel room, although I could not find the actual listed square footage. The furniture is modern contemporary Hyatt Regency and views of the capital park are great.

The bathrooms in the Sacramento Hyatt Regency feel like standard Regency bathrooms. There is decent space, including counter space, and there are the issue KenetMD amenities. The showers look nice with clear glass doors but the water pressure tends to be light and only adequate at this hotel. The commode is door side as you enter. Always love the Hyatt Regency terry cloth robes and having them for wear after showering.

The next morning, we went to the Hotel’s Vines Café restaurant for breakfast. The breakfast is a buffet style, with items you can order of the menu. I usually get the french toast and Susan does the buffet. The restaurant has a nice outdoor seating area that sits across from the state capital building. It’s shaded by hotel itself and early on summer days it’s pleasant place to have breakfast.

Afterward I wondered around and took some pictures of the hotel’s different areas. A little latter we packed up and went home. We always comment about how we enjoy these quick 1 night getaways together.

In Summary:
The Hyatt Regency Sacramento is a good downtown hotel for the state’s capital. The help is always professional and the location is convenient if you have business with the state or local firms. The hotel is listed as a category 3 by Hyatt and this rating seems correct. Downtown Sacramento is going through a massive change with the building of the King’s new NBA sports arena. It will be interesting to see how this effects the existing hotel scene, and how the Hyatt Regency changes with the coming increase in traffic and activity. In the meantime, it’s a perfect Hyatt for a status run and one-night getaway.
